How I got the shot | entry 02 | Jan 23 2021

Peace and Love Kings and Queens. I’m back again for the second installment of #howigottheshot. I wanted to do a self portrait recognizing me becoming #blonded. Shoutout to Frank Ocean. I’ve wanted to go completely blonde for about 6 months or so, and finally took the leap. I think its really becoming. lol. Big love to my lady Jeelan for always holding it down with styling my hair. Just one of the many many things she does for me :-).

So let’s get into it. Lighting for this is straight forward. I used one flash at 1/32 power, and zoomed to 105mm about 6 feet from me. The flash was bare bulb (no modifiers) blasting directly into a white wall. What this does is spread the light evenly throughout the room. I also balanced the ambient(sun light) from the window by dropping my shutter speed to 1/20th of a second.  I also shot this very shallow at f2.8.  I also included photos I took of Jeelan using the same setup. It’s a very simple, yet effective lighting setup to get great results for the low. Working with what you got is always a win. Fuck needing more. Build your personal setups slowly. Your only competition is yourself. This isn’t a sprint, it’s a marathon. That’s how I got the shot.
